Yet amid the exoskeletons of banks and cathedrals and luxury hotels overlooking a glimmering coastline that once buzzed with pleasure boats, an awful truth dawns. Mogadishu was never like other African cities. Mogadishu was a spectacular city.

I want to read more about Malagasy identity. The whole Afro-Asian, Bantu-Malay thing is fascinating. According to Wikipedia Malagasy language shares 90% of its grammar and vocabulary with a small Dayak subgroup from Borneo.

bordemagazine:

Street View has proven incredibly useful for me in getting around and in enhancing my knowledge of the city; it’s also tragic and unsettling.

Last week I street-viewed my old apartment in the Netherlands, looked at my open window and felt a deep nostalgia. I then spent the next hour reliving bicycle rides beside canals, and discovering places I never explored even when I lived nearby.

Street View demands an emotional response; it’s a vast database of fleeting dramatic moments. Our brains are programmed to create narratives and we do, incorporating the anonymous pixel-faced characters into subtle stories about a place.

Mundane searches for restaurants or laundromats become tragedies more compelling than any reality-television.

via neatorama.cachefly.net

via neatorama.cachefly.net

thepublics:

The World Cup, it is everywhere said, will market South Africa around the world, create jobs and be highly beneficial to the country’s development. In fact, it will be very much for the delectation of the well-off. At least in ancient Rome the poor got to see the chariot races and gladiatorial contests, but there is little chance of the same happening here. In practice, one may be sure, it will be the new elite who will flock to the games in their Mercs and BMWs. It is quite common in South Africa for higher civil servants or mayors and councillors from poor areas to award themselves trips to the Olympics or other such international events, often taking hundreds of hangers-on with them, all paid for from the public purse. There is little doubt that the World Cup, being local, will see more of that sort of thing than ever.

- R.W. Johnson, a long-time Liverpool supporter, lives in Cape Town. He recently lost his left leg. Luckily he is right-footed.

The Odeon Carlton before 1972 (demolished 1973) Architect Jay I. English
The Odeon Toronto opened in 1948, and was described as the “Showplace of the Dominion”. It was an enormous theatre with two spacious lobbies on the main floor and another one on the balcony level. Up the magnificent staircase at the first landing was a restaurant overlooking the lower level. It was equipped with a Hillgreen-Lane 3Manual/19Ranks organ which was opened by Al Bollington.

It was part of the Odeon building which housed the offices of Odeon Theatres Canada. It’s name was changed to the Odeon Carlton in 1956, and it premiered some of the biggest films of the day. For years it showed reserved seat roadshow films such as “Lawrence of Arabia” and “Oliver”. It also was home of James Bond movies for several years and even had a few Cinerama movies starting with “It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World” in 1963.

Sadly, in later years it could no longer attract the big crowds and it’s last attraction before closing in 1973 was “White Lighting”. It was offered to the city of Toronto for one dollar as a performing arts centre, but they passed saying it didn’t have enough room for a backstage area. It was a real loss for movie lovers and for the city of Toronto.

It was demolished later that year and replaced with an apartment building. Ironically, next door Cineplex Odeon opened a nine-screen art house, also called the Carlton, so the name still lives on.

At first I was like, “he totally doesn’t know” and then I was like, “damn I’m slow, of course he (or she) knows.”

The second Carlton closed today for good.

I took a chance on a record today at the Scarborough Buy The...

I took a chance on a record today at the Scarborough Buy The Pound because it had the word “megamix” on it.
